Gulfport’s older cottages sit near the waterline, which means higher ambient humidity and a shallower water table under the crawlspace than you would find a mile inland. A space that stays merely damp in Kenwood can hold standing water here after the same storm.
Homes elevated or rebuilt after the 2024 storm season may have newly enclosed under-floor spaces built to current flood requirements. Those need code-compliant flood openings and materials rated for below base flood elevation — and they still need a moisture plan, because a new crawlspace in Florida condenses much like an old one.
